Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday in 2021 in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom finally for slaves in Texas that were unaware or not allowed to observe the Emancipation Proclamation issued in 1863 by President Lincoln freeing all slaves. Juneteenth was first celebrated in Galveston Texas. Juneteenth in Virginia and Texas never put its stamp on the holiday as national in a big way, participated in the government supported institution of slavery or fought for emancipation like Virginians. Virginia being the birthplace of slavery in the United States and being the former capital of the confederacy and the state famous for freedom fighters fought for emancipation producing the largest slave revolt in American history against slavery in Southampton County in 1831. Nat Turner, a Southampton born slave, led the insurrection, and Dred Scott also born in Southampton County of the famous Supreme Court.
